Scandinavian Studies 419.
Scandinavian Children's Literature.
 (DuBois
(4 credits)

This course explores the forms and themes of Scandinavian children's literature from the 19th century to the present. We look at the rise of a specific literary enterprise devoted to child readers and the dominant concerns of this tradition. We also compare and contrast this enterprise with children's literature written in English. Themes and topics include the didactic tale, the place of nation in children's literature, the notion of psychosocial development, the image of the independent child, the notion of social cohesion, the animal story, picture books and films, and Scandinavian literature and authors in the broader world.
