Masterpieces of Scandinavian Literature:
From 1900 to the 1970s.

This course examines the major literary trends of the 20th Century as they manifest themselves in Scandinavian literature. Students should leave the course with a basic grasp of the terms realism, modernism, fin de siecle, and postmodernism. Emphasis is on Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. The course will cover such major literary figures as August Strindberg, Knut Hamsun, Pär Lagerkvist, Cora Sandel, Isak Dinesen, and others.
