Fall Events

Tuesday, March 4 Susan Brantly will be giving a lecture, "Engaging the Enlightenment: Tournier's Friday, Delblanc's Speranza, and Unsworth's Sacred Hunger." This is the Department's first Birgit Baldwin lecture. The lecture will be at 7:00 p.m. in Room 7191 Helen C. White Hall and will be followed by a reception.

Monday, March 31, Roswitha Skare, Associate Professor, Documentation Studies, University of Tromsø, Norway, will be giving a talk entitled“Why You (Actually) Should Judge a Book by Its Cover - Some Reflections on Christa Wolf's ‘What Remains.’” from Noon-1:00 p.m in 4207 H.C. White Hall, 600 N. Park Street, Madison.

April 4-6, The Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures is using part of the recent Baltic programming donation to sponsor three films and a speaker at the Wisconsin Film Festival.

As part of this year's Wisconsin Film Festival The film, entitled The Singing Revolution, focuses on the Estonian song revolution It will be shown on Saturday April 5 at 11:30 am and on Sunday April 6 at 5:45 pm, at the Stage Door Theater In connection with the Saturday showing, we will also have a question and answer session at the theater with our Seattle colleague Guntis Smidchens, incoming president of the American Association for Baltic Studies and one of the co-hosts for the coming 2010 joint SASS-AABS conference to be held in Seattle.

Thursday, April 10, Professor Marianne E. Kalinkie, Univeristy of Illinois-Urbana, will give a lecture entitled "Cultural Transfer in the Norse World: The Case of Klari Saga," at 7:00 pm in 7187 Helen C. White Hall.

Tuesday, April 15 at 7 PM in 104 Van Hise the Danish movie "Kunsten at graede i kor" - "The art of crying in a chorus" will be shown in the nice, cushy classroom with great chairs etc. Nete Schmidt will also be providing some munchies of Danish origin - what it will be will come as a surprise!!

Thursday, April 17 at 7:30 pm there will be a lecture by Jon Helt Haarder from Syddansk Universitet, UC Berkeley entitled “Stylized Authenticity, Moralized Reality. Introducing Performative Biographism”, in 7191 Helen C. White.

Tuesday, April 21 at 11:30 AM Pasi Sahlberg will give a talk entitled "Finnish Education Policy: A Model for Reform?" in 259 Educational Sciences Building.

Saturday, 26 April from 3pm-4pm there will be a Public Discussion Session at the "National Scandinavian Languages Assessment Workshop" in Ingraham Hall, Room 206, 1155 Observatory Drive. For updates, please check the CES website at http://uw-madison-ces.org/.

Thursday May 1, Nete Schmidt will host the final event of the year, the Spring party to celebrate the graduating majors and to catch up on any advising questions you might have. The party is from 2-4 PM in the Reading room, 1312 Van Hise - and there will be munchies etc. Be sure to drop by to congratulate our graduates and to say hi to other majors - and again, bring a friend.

The Finnish language table is an opportunity for people of all levels to get together and speak Finnish. The Finnish table will be held during the Spring every every Thursday from 2:00 to 3:00 in 1312 Van Hise.

The Swedish Language table is this year transformed into a pan-Nordic table where all the speakers of the Nordic, especially the Germanic Nordic, Languages are welcome. It is an opportunity for people of all levels to get together and speak the Nordic Languages and become involved in Norden, the new language floor and community. The Language table will be held every Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:30 in the Rathskeller. we will meet for the first time the second week of classes, January 23th and will until the final week of Classes on the 7th of May. We hope to see you there!

The Norwegian language table is an opportunity for people of all levels to get together and speak Norwegian. The Norwegian table will be held during the spring every every Wednesday from 11:00-12:15 in Liz Waters cafeteria. Peggy and Tanya are the contact people if there are any questions.

The Danish language table is an opportunity for people of all levels to get together and speak Danish. The Danish table will be held during the Fall every every Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 in Liz Waters cafeteria.
